What Upfirst is
Upfirst is an AI answering service. You forward your business number to it, or use the number it gives you, and an AI receptionist picks up. It answers questions from what it learned about your business, takes messages, books appointments, and transfers calls to you or your team based on rules you set. After each call you get a summary, transcript and recording by text or email.
It’s built for small businesses in general and has industry pages for contractors, HVAC and plumbing. The contractor page says it can screen emergencies, take messages for routine calls and schedule consultations “from roofing to landscaping.”
Upfirst pricing (official, Oct 26 2026)
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Calls included | Extra calls | Per included call |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $24.95 | $20/mo | 30 | $1.50 each | $0.83 |
| Premium | $59.95 | $48/mo | 90 | $1.00 each | $0.67 |
| Pro (most popular) | $159.95 | $128/mo | 300 | $0.75 each | $0.53 |
| Scale | $299 | $240/mo | 600 | $0.70 each | $0.50 |
| Custom | Contact sales | 600+ | Volume discounts |
The “per included call” column is our math: plan price divided by included calls.
What else the pricing page says:
- A 14-day free trial with full features, and no contract.
- Spam, calls under 15 seconds and silent calls are never billed.
- A phone number is included, you can forward your current number, and porting is free.
- Each extra agent costs $9.95/mo, for separate businesses or locations.
- Pro and Scale add white-glove onboarding, custom integrations and a priority support queue. Custom adds volume discounts and BAAs.
- There’s a free 30-minute onboarding call.
Features that matter for trades
On every plan:
- 24/7 answering, with modes for every call, overflow only, or after hours.
- Instant call summaries, recordings and transcripts.
- Live warm transfers to you, your office or an on-call tech, based on your rules.
- Appointment booking into Google Calendar, Outlook, Acuity, Calendly, Square and Clio, or a text with your booking link.
- Texting during the call, spam blocking and Zapier.
- 35+ languages, with automatic switching.
- Memory of returning callers.
- Custom Actions, which connect to any CRM with an API.
For HVAC, plumbing and electrical: Upfirst’s HVAC page describes emergency dispatch to your on-call tech, custom call flows for emergencies versus maintenance, and alerts you can limit to emergencies. Its plumbing page covers telling a burst pipe from a dripping faucet and flagging gas-line calls for immediate dispatch.
Field software: The HVAC and contractor FAQs say Upfirst works with ServiceTitan “and many other CRMs” through Zapier. The HVAC page names ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro and Jobber. That means you’ll build a Zap that creates a lead or client record. It isn’t a native two-way sync with your schedule. If you’re choosing field software too, see Jobber vs Housecall Pro.
Setup
Upfirst says most businesses can go live the same day, and setup takes under 30 minutes:
- Enter your website, or type instructions, so the AI learns your services, service area and pricing rules.
- Add transfer rules, like “transfer if the caller reports no heat or an active leak.”
- Forward calls from your existing line: all calls, missed calls only, or after hours only.
- Choose how you get summaries (text or email) and which calls trigger alerts.
You can also set it up from ChatGPT or Claude through Upfirst’s connector, or book the free 30-minute onboarding call.
Pros
- Cheap to start. $24.95/mo, or $20/mo billed annually, with booking and transfers included.
- Fair billing. No charge for spam, silent calls or calls under 15 seconds. Wrong numbers and robocalls don’t use up your calls.
- Per-call pricing. Long calls cost the same as short ones, which suits trades customers who explain their problem at length.
- Every feature on every plan. You don’t have to upgrade just to transfer an emergency.
- Flexible coverage. Built-in overflow and after-hours modes.
- Easy to leave. No contract, a 14-day full-feature trial and free porting.
Cons
- No native field-software sync. Jobber, Housecall Pro and ServiceTitan connections go through Zapier, which you set up and may pay for separately.
- Small plans overflow fast. Starter’s 30 calls go quickly in busy season, and overage on Starter is $1.50 a call. If you’re regularly over about 40 calls, Premium costs less.
- Onboarding and support. White-glove onboarding is only on Pro and Scale. Human support runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Eastern, with an AI assistant on weekends, which matters if your problem starts on a Saturday night.
- Extra locations cost more. Each additional agent is $9.95/mo.
- Your own team takes over. The pricing page doesn’t list live human receptionists as a backup. Transferred calls go to your people.
Upfirst vs the alternatives
| Upfirst | Rosie | My AI Front Desk | Smith.ai (AI) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry plan | $24.95, 30 calls | $49, 250 min | $99, 200 min | Free, 25 calls |
| Billing unit | Call | Minute (60s rounding) | Minute plus credits | Call |
| Booking and transfer on entry plan | Yes | From $149 Scale | Yes | Yes |
| Going over | $1.50 to $0.70 per call | Auto-upgrade | $0.25/min | $3.00 to $2.10 per call |
| Trial | 14 days | 7 days | 7 days | Free plan |
- Rosie is cheaper per minute if your calls are very short, and every plan has English and Spanish. But booking and transfers start at $149, and overage moves you up a plan.
- My AI Front Desk adds web chat, texting and a CRM in one plan, at a higher entry price with 200 minutes. See the My AI Front Desk review.
- Smith.ai can pass calls to human receptionists, but costs more per call.

Who Upfirst fits
- Good fit: solo to five-truck plumbing, HVAC, electrical, landscaping and cleaning businesses with up to a few hundred calls a month. It suits shops that want emergencies transferred and routine jobs booked or messaged, and owners happy to set up one Zap into their field software.
- Poor fit: large dispatch operations that need deep, native ServiceTitan scheduling. Also businesses that want live humans as a fallback, or teams that need weekend human support from the vendor.
FAQ
